Computers were introduced to El Limon in 1997, in connection with the village’s hydroelectric installation; both were managed by the Cornell University affiliated EcoPartners Project, the forerunner of CAREL. Narrow-band wireless Internet was added in 1998, and from 1999 – 2002 a community IT development project operated with funding from the InterAmerican Foundation. A broadband link to Ocoa and VoIP telephony were added in 2004. Four computers are now available in Limon for public use at the El Limon school. A second repeater was installed to serve three additional villages. Los Martinez is now on line, with one Internet connected computer at the village school and one telephone in operation. |
