CAREL and Los Martinez Confront Climate Change

In the mountains of the Dominican Republic, the farnming village of Los Martinez is creating an innovative model for the global transition to regenerative organic agriculture

Regenerative organic agriculture is the only proven technology for removing large quantites of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It also addresses pressing issues of environmental degradation, agricultural collapse, and toxic threats to farmers and consumers. Many farmers recognize the need for change, but need models of a better way, as well as various forms of support, to successfully make the transition.

Progress to Date

• The women of Los Martinez have started an organic teaching garden, with the expert assistance of agronomist and successful organic farmer Esmelin Mateo

• A lab to measure soil Total Organic Carbon is in operation in Los Martinez, as of September 1, 2018

• A regional marketing and distribution program is being developed that will include weekly box distribution and a produce truck

Office and Classroom Finished
CAREL has completed our classroom and office building in El Limon with support from the OAS, and is offering workshops in micro-hydroelectric technology and wireless rural internet access.
